Evolutionary Structural Optimization

1. A load transfer mechanism is obtained by eliminating the finite elements (that are negligible in transferring load) with performance- and topology-based optimization techniques.

2. It is impractical to implement since the techniques require numerous iterative eliminations and a numerical model consisting of a great number of elements.

3. The strut-tie models selected are generally determinate truss structures inducing difficulties in terms of practical horizontal and/or vertical placements of reinforcing bars and congestions of reinforcing bars due to concentrated tensile forces of steel ties. Furthermore, a simple determinate truss structure causes difficulties in reflecting the actual structural behavior in design.
